Bij Kootwijk op de Veluwe wordt in 1919 begonnen met de bouw van een radiostation. Radio Kootwijk verzorgt in 1923 de eerste transoceanische telegraafverbinding met Nederlands-Indië. Dankzij de zender kan vanaf 1928 naar de kolonie gebeld worden. 
Op het terrein staan behalve radiozendgebouwen ook de woningen van medewerkers, vandaar dat het een heus dorp wordt met de naam Radio Kootwijk. Vooral Gebouw A van het zendpark spreekt tot de verbeelding, met het uiterlijk van een kathedraal. Het pand wordt zelfs inspiratiebron voor de Radio Kootwijkse dichter Cees van der Pluijm. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog gebruiken de Duitse bezetters het station voor militaire doeleinden. Wanneer hun capitulatie ophanden is, blazen de Duitsers de grote zendmast (‘Lange Gerrit’ genoemd) op. In de loop van de eeuw verliest Radio Kootwijk zijn positie als belangrijkste radioverbindingpunt. Dit komt door nieuwe technische ontwikkelingen, zoals de komst van de satelliet. Het gebouw van Radio Kootwijk bestaat nog steeds en het terrein is in 2004 open gesteld voor het publiek The radio transmitting station at Kootwijk, the Netherlands, contains the shortwave transmitting equipment with which the Netherlands' Governmental PTT Administration runs the longdistance commercial radiotelegraph and radiotelephone communication services with several countries abroad. Since its foundation in 1923 the station had developed into one of the largest transmitting stations in Europe. During the last stages of World War II, the station has been almost completely dismantled and destroyed by demolition units of the German army. Reconstruction was started in June 1945 and at present the station is again one of the largest in Europe.
