Een randmeer is een water rondom een polder dat als doel heeft de waterhuishouding van de polder te isoleren van het omliggende land. 
Wanneer een polder wordt aangelegd, ligt het "oude land" hoger dan het "nieuwe land". Wanneer het oude land direct op het nieuwe land aansluit, zoals bij de Noordoostpolder met Overijssel en Friesland en de Wieringermeer met Noord-Holland, dan zal de waterspiegel in het oude land zakken waardoor verdroging plaatsvindt. Water zal naar het nieuwe land stromen waardoor, zeker aan de randen, een zeer vochtig milieu ontstaat. Drainage lijkt een oplossing, maar de problemen in het oude land nemen daardoor alleen maar toe. Door de inrichting van een randmeer van voldoende grootte, blijft de waterdruk naar het oude land op het oude peil. De polder heeft zijn eigen waterhuishouding. Voor de Noordoostpolder werd onderzocht of het wenselijk is om een strook water te maken tussen Flevoland aan de ene kant en Friesland en Overijssel aan de andere. Op 29 maart 2004 is definitief besloten om hiervan af te zien in verband met de hoge kosten. De huidige Nederlandse randmeren, die de polders Zuidelijk en Oostelijk Flevoland omgeven, zijn ook grote recreatiegebieden en zorgen voor nieuwe natuur. Stoomgemaal Hertog ReijnoutMidden in de polder Arkemheen ligt een uniek monument, het stoomgemaal Hertog Reijnout. Dit stoomgemaal is 100 jaar lang in bedrijf geweest, van 1883 tot 1983. Daarna werd haar functie overgenomen door een electrisch gemaal dat nu overtollig water uit de polder maalt. In 1985 werd het stoomgemaal gerestaureerd zodat dit cultuurhistorische monument behouden blijft voor de toekomst. Stoomgemaal Hertog Reijnout is het enige nog werkende gemaal met buitenschepraderen.
